Weight can be a useful tool when tracking fitness progress during a fitness assessment. You might have access to a scale at home or at the gym and, even if you don’t have access to a scale, you probably consider the number important enough to have a ballpark figure of your current weight, as well as your ideal weight (which for many people is often not synonymous with current weight).

Why weight is important… weight plays an important role in health. It is estimated that at least 60% of Americans are overweight and that around 30% of Americans are obese. A measure called the Body Mass Index (BMI) determines what range you fall into.

Among other things, being overweight and obese can put you at greater risk for:

  • Sleeping and sleep apnea
  • Heart attacks and hypertension
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Some cancers

Measuring BMI… Body Mass Index looks at weight in relation to height. To calculate BMI, take your weight in lbs, multiply by your height in inches squared and then multiply by 703.

lbs x (height)² x 703

A BMI of 30 or more indicates obesity, a BMI of 25 to 29.9 indicates overweight, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 indicates a healthy weight, and a BMI of under 18.5 indicates underweight.

How you can lose weight… Weight loss depends on many factors, but a great way to get started is to focus on your wellness. Consider these three areas: exercise, nutrition and stress reduction. Nutrition and exercise help in creating a calorie deficit – you need to consume fewer calories than you burn in order to lose weight. Lastly, stress reduction reduces the amount of fat your body stores.
